Jen G. Pywell, CPDT-KA, FDM, HDT empowers dog parents to lovingly nurture a positive relationship with their dogs. This humane approach considers the unique needs of each dog and family to create a custom training plan that is realistic, effective and easy to implement.
Training sessions are 1:1 in person or virtual.
Excessive Barking, Leash Reactivity, Aggression, Jumping, Mouthiness, House Soiling, Destruction, Separation Anxiety, Stranger Danger & Resource Guarding are all issues that are difficult for dogs, pet parents and families. Understanding your dog's unique needs, previous learning and experiences, breed traits, environment and personality are all considered as well as your own needs, abilities, concerns and goals.
You aren't alone if you feel like you have done everything but still can't figure out why you are having "problems" with your dog. Food is a great motivator, but some behaviors can't be "fixed" with treat training alone and punishment often compounds the issues. It's important to understand what your dog is telling you before you try to solve what you (and everyone else) thinks are her behavior issues. There is no one size fits all approach.
A relationship based dog training approach will help you develop a mutually beneficial relationship with your dog. Understanding what is expected from each family member (including your dog) will set you all up for success, peace and happiness. By learning who your dog is, what your dog needs, what external factors are at play, and how your dog fits into your family and lifestyle, you can implement a realistic training plan right away.
After a 15min complimentary phone consultation with Holistic Dog Trainer Jen Pywell, a detailed questionnaire will be emailed to you to complete and the initial 90min training consultation will be scheduled. Before the first meeting, Jen will spend time reviewing your questionnaire. Having a clean bill of health from a veterinarian is a good step to rule out behavior related to medical issues.
The initial 90min holistic dog training consultation can be scheduled in person or on zoom. The first 60min of the meeting will be a discussion. We will go over your answers to the questionnaire to get a clear picture of your dog's history, needs, learning experiences, breed traits, and the current environment. From there we develop a management plan that you can put in place immediately. During the final 15-30min we will explore exercises and skills to address specific behaviors.
After the initial training assessment you will receive a customized training and management plan and schedule via email that will detail the strategies we discussed as well as detailed instructions for specific exercises. A list of recommended tools, important concepts and other helpful material will be included. Future skills to train will be recommended if you chose to move on to schedule follow-up training sessions.
It is often the case that the initial session and training plan empowers you to discover exactly what is getting in the way of your dog training success. More complex issues may require additional training sessions or there are other training goals to develop. During these 60min follow-up sessions, we will discuss the progress or obstacles since the last session and I will answer any questions. We will work on new skills to learn that were recommended and a modified training plan will be created after each follow-up session.
As your dog ages and the family dynamics change there may be the need for additional holistic dog training support. Changing circumstances - a sudden move, a new pet, divorce, loss of a loved one - present unique challenges for everyone in the family, including the dog. Jen is dedicated to supporting your dog and your family through any emotional hardship or life transition that may present itself in difficult to manage behavioral responses.
Jen Pywell is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) Holistic Dog Trainer (HDT) Certified Family Dog Mediator (FDM) and a Modern Energy Tapping Professional (MET) (sometimes referred to as EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique). She offers this self empowering technique to dog parents and families during the training process to help lower stress, overcome limiting beliefs and explore solutions for dog behavior issues from a place of positivity, compassion and love. In her many years of working with dogs and their families, she has discovered that families also need emotional support. This optional and easy to learn practice can amplify the effectiveness of dog training because it very quickly helps you remove stuck energy that is getting in the way of having a fulfilling relationship with your dog.
Shock, prong and choke collars, physical and verbal intimidation, alpha training and other aversive techniques are not only harmful to your dog physically, energetically and emotionally, but they damage the beautiful and trusting bond you deserve to experience with your dog. Using force, pain and fear may quickly and for a short time get the "correct" behaviors from your dog, but they serve to only suppress emotions, which have no choice to come out in other, sometimes more challenging ways. If you have used any of these techniques in the past, all is not lost, because dogs have an incredible capacity to live in the moment and fully forgive. Forgive yourself, too and allow yourself to evolve into a gentler and more effective holistic training method.
